SuffolkOur very Special Mum!

“Hi, my name is Monty and I am Australia’s most special equine Mum! My baby that’s growing inside is a very rare breed of horse called a Suffolk Punch. There are only 6 Suffolk Punch horses in the southern hemisphere and only around 500 left in the entire world. I’m playing an important role in securing this amazing breeds future.”

Glenworth Valley is currently embarking on a breeding program to boost pure and part bred numbers of Suffolk Punch horses in Australia.

Monty, our surrogate Mum, is carrying a purebred embryo. The program has had further success, with two of our homebred mares, to create 80% Suffolk Punch offspring. These rare foals are due in December, later this year.

The Suffolk Punch is an English breed of draught horse designed for heavy agricultural work. Sadly, once machines started taking over farm work, the breed was no longer required and began decreasing drastically in numbers.

The Suffolk Punch has been on the critically endangered breeds list for many years but numbers are beginning to bounce back. This is mostly due to their placid temperaments and weight carrying abilities being recognised within the modern horse leisure industry.

Happy Mother's Day Monty!
